Congress Has Affection for a Terrorist : Shiv Sena Leader Sanjay Nirupam
Mumbai: Shiv Sena deputy leader and spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam launched a sharp attack on the Congress party today, accusing its leaders of showing unwarranted sympathy towards Tahawwur Rana, a key conspirator of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
Addressing a press conference in Mumbai, Nirupam said, “The Modi government has achieved a major diplomatic and legal victory by securing Tahawwur Rana’s extradition from the United States. Rather than acknowledging this breakthrough in the global fight against terrorism, Congress leaders seem preoccupied with political posturing.”
Nirupam especially criticised senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram, alleging that he is trying to take credit for Rana’s extradition. “This claim is not only baseless but also deeply irresponsible,” Nirupam said. “While the NIA had registered a case against Rana and David Headley in November 2009, the Congress-led UPA government failed to take any concrete action.”
He further pointed out that after a U.S. court acquitted Rana in 2011, no diplomatic steps or appeals were pursued by the then UPA government. “It was only under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership that the extradition process was revived with seriousness and commitment,” he added.
Highlighting the joint resolve of PM Modi and former U.S. President Donald Trump against terrorism, Nirupam said that it was their efforts that reignited the case and led to the NIA’s renewed push for extradition—culminating in a favorable verdict by the U.S. Supreme Court.
“All credit for this diplomatic success goes to the Modi government’s relentless efforts,” Nirupam asserted.
He also reminded the media of the horror and gravity of the 26/11 attacks, and accused Congress of attempting to deflect blame by falsely implicating the RSS at the time. “It was a shameful political maneuver, unbecoming of a national party,” he said.
Presenting data, Nirupam drew comparisons between the UPA and NDA eras. “Between 2004 and 2014, India saw 9,739 terror incidents. In contrast, under the Modi government, barring a few in Jammu & Kashmir, India has largely remained free from major terror attacks. That reflects the strength and effectiveness of the current anti-terror strategy.”
In his concluding remarks, Nirupam called for national unity over security issues. “Terrorism should never be politicized. What the Congress failed to do in a decade, PM Modi has delivered. Instead of engaging in petty politics, they should express support for a safer, stronger India.”
