New Delhi: Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Friday raised a strong challenge to the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Central government, questioning their silence on US politician Tulsi Gabbard’s comments about the vulnerability of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). He also called on the Supreme Court to take suo moto cognizance of the issue.

Surjewala took to X (formerly Twitter), where he referred to Gabbard, the US Director of National Intelligence, publicly stating that EVMs are “vulnerable to exploitation to manipulate the results of the votes being cast.” He further questioned why the Chief Election Commissioner and the ECI’s official handle had not responded to these remarks, accusing the poll body of attempting to plant “source-based stories” to counter Gabbard’s claims.

He also criticized the silence of the Prime Minister, the NDA government, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on the matter, asking, “Why are PM, NDA Govt & BJP ‘mum’?” Surjewala went on to suggest that the ECI and the Modi government should have reached out to the US government and Gabbard to gather further details about potential vulnerabilities in EVMs and test them against these concerns.

Noting that Gabbard was recently felicitated in India on March 17, Surjewala questioned the fairness of dismissing her statements outright. “Is it fair and just to outrightly rubbish and reject the statement made by the Director of National Intelligence of the U.S., whom we felicitated less than a month ago?” he asked.

Surjewala also urged the Supreme Court to intervene and take suo moto notice of the issue, stressing the importance of free and fair elections as part of the Constitution’s “basic structure.” “Should the Supreme Court of India not take suo moto notice of the issue and conduct a thorough investigation?” he posted on X.
