Fresh Controversy Hits Indian Wrestling Amid WFI Rules Dispute
Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik has openly criticised the Wrestling Federation of India over its decision to restrict wrestler Vinesh Phogat from participating in a trial event, escalating an already heated dispute within Indian wrestling. The controversy centres around administrative eligibility rules and has triggered a wider debate on athlete support systems in the country.
Sakshi Malik Questions Federation Policies on Athlete Comebacks
In a strongly worded video shared on social media, Sakshi Malik defended fellow wrestler Vinesh Phogat, stating that several international sports bodies make flexible arrangements for athletes, especially women returning to competition after personal milestones like motherhood. She alleged that recent regulatory decisions by the federation appeared to make it harder for Phogat to stage a comeback.
Show Cause Notice and Eligibility Dispute Escalate Tension
The Wrestling Federation of India had earlier issued a show cause notice to Vinesh Phogat citing “whereabouts failure” and raised concerns over eligibility rules linked to mandatory cooling-off periods after retirement declarations. The federation maintained that these rules are aligned with anti-doping compliance frameworks, which require strict procedural adherence before an athlete can return to competition.
Vinesh Phogat Defies Restriction, Appears at Tournament
Despite being declared ineligible by WFI, Vinesh Phogat reportedly appeared at the National Open Ranking Tournament held in Gonda, further intensifying the confrontation between the athlete and the governing body. Her participation comes amid ongoing disagreements over regulatory interpretation and athlete rights within the sport.
Appeal for Government Intervention in Sports Dispute
Sakshi Malik also appealed to top authorities, including the Prime Minister and Sports Ministry, urging them to allow Phogat’s trial participation so she can continue representing India at the highest level. She emphasised the need for policies that support women athletes returning to competitive sport.
Background of Vinesh Phogat’s Olympic Setback and Career Shift
Vinesh Phogat’s career took a dramatic turn after she was disqualified from the final bout at the 2024 Paris Olympics for being marginally over the weight limit. Following the setback, she briefly stepped away from wrestling and later entered politics, where she was elected as a legislator from Haryana’s Julana constituency.
