Mumbai Police has filed a comprehensive 1,000-page chargesheet in the chilling stabbing case involving Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, months after the January 16 break-in and attack at his Bandra residence. The document, submitted under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Passport Act, formally accuses Shariful Islam Shehzad of attempted murder and unlawful entry with intent to commit theft.

According to investigators, Shehzad broke into Khan’s 12th-floor flat in the dead of night, armed with two knives and a clear intent to rob. However, the intrusion quickly escalated into violence when the accused was confronted by the actor himself. In a dramatic turn of events, Saif was stabbed multiple times before the assailant fled the scene.

Khan had earlier recounted the terrifying episode in a statement to Bombay Times, saying, “Kareena and I were asleep when one of our staff members alerted us that someone had entered Jeh’s room. I ran in and saw a man standing there with knives.”

Medical teams at Lilavati Hospital later retrieved a broken blade fragment from Saif’s back during an emergency procedure. The handle of the weapon was discovered separately in a nearby pond. Forensic tests have now confirmed that all three pieces—recovered from the crime scene, the actor’s body, and the accused—belonged to the same knife.

The chargesheet also reveals that a cap suspected to belong to Shehzad was recovered from the apartment and sent for DNA testing. Witnesses listed include household staff, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and others who were present at the time or shortly after the incident.

“This chargesheet includes several pieces of evidence found by the police against the arrested accused, Shariful Islam. The forensic lab report has confirmed the knife fragments are all from a single weapon,” a police source told news agency.

Following the attack, the accused remained at large for two days before being apprehended by police. Investigators have since pieced together the sequence of events that led to the assault, suggesting it was a robbery attempt gone wrong.

Saif Ali Khan, 54, spent five days in hospital recovering from his injuries before being discharged. While he has since resumed his routine, the traumatic incident continues to raise concerns about the safety of high-profile personalities in Mumbai’s luxury apartments.
