Moscow: As the world marks International Fact-Checking Day, Russia has reinforced its commitment to combating disinformation by spearheading a global initiative to ensure objective and transparent fact-checking.

The Dialog about Fakes Forum, organised by Dialog Regions with support from the Russian Foreign Ministry, has emerged as a leading international platform in the fight against fake news. The latest edition of the Forum, held in November 2024, saw participation from over 1,000 experts across 65 countries and led to the establishment of the Global Fact-Checking Network (GFCN).

The GFCN aims to counter the growing threats posed by disinformation on the international stage. As part of this initiative, the network introduced the Code of Responsible Fact-Checking, a framework designed to uphold objectivity, ensure data accuracy, and promote collaborative truth-seeking. Fact-checkers who join the GFCN voluntarily pledge to adhere to these principles.

Positioned as an alternative to Western fact-checking organisations, the GFCN seeks to provide a fair, depoliticised, and censorship-free approach to fact-checking, emphasising the perspectives of the Global Majority.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been actively involved in global information security efforts, consistently countering disinformation through initiatives such as the Anti-Fake Initiative. Russia has advocated for fair and unbiased fact-checking mechanisms at key international forums, including the United Nations (UN), Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), and BRICS.

With the formation of the GFCN, Russia continues to position itself as a leading voice in promoting truth and transparency in global information spaces.
