Kolkata : The primary suspect in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case, Sanjay Roy, voiced an explosive allegation on Monday, claiming he was falsely implicated and accusing former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal of masterminding a conspiracy against him. Roy made this statement while being escorted from a Kolkata court, shouting from inside a police van as journalists pursued him for comments.
Roy was presented before the court for the start of his trial regarding the rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, an incident that has attracted widespread media attention. His trial is now underway in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das, with proceedings held behind closed doors for privacy due to the sensitive nature of the case.
Following the gruesome discovery of the doctor’s body in a seminar room at the hospital on August 9, Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on August 10. The case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) after the Calcutta High Court intervened, responding to public outcry and allegations of mishandling at the local level.
In court, Roy faces serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, including provisions on rape, causing death, and murder, specifically under Sections 64, 66, and 103. The prosecution is expected to rely on the evidence collected during both the local police’s initial inquiry and the CBI’s ongoing investigation, which is closely scrutinizing the case.
Roy’s accusation against Goyal adds complexity, as he contends that he has been set up by senior officials. His claims add an unusual twist to an already high-stakes trial that has spotlighted concerns over healthcare worker safety and the challenges facing the justice system in handling high-profile cases with alleged political influence. The legal proceedings are expected to bring further details to light as they continue in the coming weeks.
