Jodhpur : In Rajasthan, self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor, was granted 30-day parole for medical treatment. He was admitted to a private Ayurvedic hospital in Jodhpur on Sunday night after arriving by ambulance. The parole order was issued by a division bench of the Rajasthan High Court, consisting of Justices Dinesh Mehta and Vineet Kumar Mathur, who responded to a request filed by Asaram’s legal team.

This marks the second time in 11 years that Asaram has received parole for medical reasons. Previously, he was granted a seven-day parole in August for treatment in Maharashtra. For the current parole period, Asaram’s counsel had sought permission for him to stay in medical care for an indefinite duration, contingent on the treating doctor’s discharge orders. However, the government counsel, Additional Advocate General Deepak Chaudhary, advocated for a 30-day limit on the parole. After reviewing both arguments, the court settled on a 30-day period for Asaram’s treatment.

Asaram has been incarcerated since 2013 after being convicted in a high-profile case that brought national attention to issues of sexual abuse and exploitation by individuals in positions of spiritual authority. His parole and ongoing legal battles continue to draw public scrutiny, highlighting the complexities surrounding high-profile incarcerations and the access to healthcare rights of inmates.
