New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday likened her appointment to the storyline of the Hindi movie Nayak, emphasizing that her selection was not a “lottery” but an honor for all daughters of the country.

Addressing the India Today Conclave, Gupta, the first and only woman chief minister in BJP-ruled states, outlined her vision for the capital, promising major infrastructural and environmental reforms. She announced that her government would ensure the cleaning of the Yamuna within three years, launch a ferry service on the river, and reduce Delhi’s three massive landfill sites by 80-90% within the next two years.

“We will ensure that Delhi does not face water shortages in the summers and tackle waterlogging issues during the monsoon,” she assured.

When asked about her selection over several senior BJP leaders, Gupta dismissed speculations and credited the people of Delhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “Let no one have any misunderstanding. This victory is due to the people of Delhi and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” she asserted. “This is not just a post; it is a job and a responsibility. Our goal is a developed Delhi for a developed India.”

Gupta also highlighted the larger significance of her appointment, stating that women in Indian society often do not get opportunities to be at the forefront. She emphasized that her elevation to the top post was part of a well-thought-out vision by the BJP and PM Modi. “This is not a mere symbolic facelift but a genuine effort to promote women to higher decision-making roles,” she said.
