Mumbai: As monsoon showers lashed the financial capital on Monday, Maharashtra Water Resources and Disaster Management Minister Girish Mahajan issued a stern warning to residents to remain vigilant amid the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in the city.

“Mumbai has received a lot of rain today. Traffic remains largely normal in the city. There is waterlogging in the Hindmata area. The BMC team is working in the area. People should remain on alert as heavy rain is expected between 2pm-4pm today,” said Mahajan during a media briefing.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, indicating the possibility of severe weather conditions, especially in low-lying and flood-prone zones.

While much of the city’s traffic continued without major disruptions, the Hindmata area once again reported significant waterlogging—a recurring issue that civic authorities were quick to address. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) teams have been deployed with pumps and emergency response gear to manage the rising water levels.

Minister Mahajan also confirmed the presence of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) in the city. “There is a team of NDRF present in Mumbai. Recently, the CM held a meeting with the Disaster Management Department and other agencies,” he stated, assuring that the government was prepared to handle any emergencies that might arise.

According to weather officials, between 2 pm and 4 pm today could see the heaviest spell, and citizens have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, especially in flood-prone areas.
