Reciprocal Tariffs from April 2: Trump Targets India, China, EU in Trade War Escalation

US President Donald Trump has announced that his administration will impose reciprocal tariffs on America’s trading partners, including India, China, and the European Union, from April 2, in a move aimed at countering what he calls unfair trade policies that have hurt American businesses for decades. Speaking during his first joint address to the US Congress since taking office, Trump criticized several nations, alleging that they impose significantly higher tariffs on American goods. “Other countries have used tariffs against us for decades, and now it is our turn. The European Union, China, Brazil, India, and many others charge us tremendously higher tariffs than we charge them. This is very unfair,” Trump stated.

The announcement comes just a day after new 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports took effect, alongside a doubling of duties on Chinese goods to 20%. In response, all three nations have announced retaliatory tariffs against the US, further intensifying global trade tensions. Trump singled out India, stating that it imposes tariffs exceeding 100% on US goods, while China’s average tariffs are twice that of the US. “This is happening by friends and foes alike. The system is not fair to the US—it never was. On April 2, reciprocal tariffs kick in. Whatever they tax us, we will tax them,” he declared, adding that he chose April 2 deliberately to avoid April Fool’s Day associations.

Trump warned that nations using “non-monetary tariffs” to block US exports would face non-monetary barriers in return. “We will take in trillions and trillions of dollars and create jobs like we have never seen before. We’ve been ripped off for decades by every country on earth, and we will not let that happen any longer,” he asserted. The move has already triggered strong reactions from global trade partners. India, China, and the EU are expected to announce countermeasures, which could impact key sectors like agriculture, technology, and manufacturing.

  3. Along with almost everything which seems to be building throughout this area, many of your opinions happen to be relatively stimulating. On the other hand, I appologize, because I can not subscribe to your whole plan, all be it refreshing none the less. It seems to everybody that your remarks are actually not totally justified and in fact you are your self not thoroughly certain of the argument. In any event I did take pleasure in examining it.
