Amritsar: Thousands of farmers gathered at the Golden Gate in Amritsar on Wednesday to protest against the Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led government, accusing it of ignoring their demands and violating human rights. Led by farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, the protestors announced plans to burn effigies of the Mann government at various locations across the state, intensifying their agitation. Pandher declared that similar programs would be held in 18 districts, with 21 locations in Amritsar alone witnessing the symbolic protest.
Accusing the government of suppressing the farmers’ movement, Pandher demanded the release of farmers allegedly arrested by the Punjab police. “We will have programs in around 18 districts. At 21 locations in Amritsar alone, we will burn effigies of the Bhagwant Mann government. Today’s program will be held at hundreds of locations across Punjab. SKM’s Punjab Union leader was detained along with the leadership of Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. This is a protest against the human rights violations of farmers. It will be done peacefully, and we demand that all arrested farmers be released,” Pandher stated.
Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee leader Gurbachan Singh Chhaba also slammed CM Bhagwant Mann, accusing him of instigating people and failing to address the farmers’ concerns. He criticized Mann for walking out of a crucial meeting with farmers, saying, “For the first time, we are seeing a Chief Minister who leaves a meeting with farmers midway.”
