In a statement on Thursday, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale urged the government to initiate an investigation into the possible involvement of Pakistan in the recent violence in Kolhapur.
Tensions escalated in the city when two individuals allegedly shared an offensive audio message along with an image of Tipu Sultan, an 18th-century ruler from Mysore, as their social media “status.” Following demands for action by a group of right-wing activists, a case was registered. Subsequently, due to further protests, another FIR was filed, leading to the arrest of seven individuals.
Protesters took to the streets once again on Wednesday. Kolhapur Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit stated, “Certain organizations had called for a Kolhapur bandh, and their members gathered at Shivaji Chowk today. After their demonstration concluded, as the crowd began to disperse, a few troublemakers started throwing stones, prompting the police to use force in order to disperse them.”
