Tensions flared in the Rajya Sabha on Friday as Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar sternly warned Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha for protesting and making a hand gesture while attempting to raise a point of order amidst the tumultuous discussion over the Lok Sabha security breach that occurred on Wednesday.
The opposition’s fervent demand to suspend the day’s scheduled business and engage in a discussion regarding the “serious situation arising from the breach of security” on December 13 was not sanctioned by Dhankhar. Instead, he proceeded with the Zero Hour, triggering uproar among opposition MPs, leading to slogans and protests.
During this chaos, Chadha attempted to bring forward a point of order using a hand gesture, which drew the ire of the Chairman. Dhankhar objected, advising Chadha to voice his concerns verbally, stating, “Use your tongue, don’t gesture with your hands.” He further reprimanded Chadha, cautioning against disruptive behavior and quipping, “Sit quietly on your seat. You have already been punished by this House.”
Chadha, previously suspended during the Monsoon session for presenting “misleading” facts to the media, had his suspension revoked on December 4. However, the disruptions persisted as opposition MPs demanded Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s statement and discussions on the security breach.
Efforts to restore order failed, leading to repeated adjournments. Dhankhar adjourned the House till 2 pm and convened meetings with key opposition and ruling party leaders. However, upon reconvening, the chaos resumed, forcing the House’s adjournment for the day amidst unyielding opposition protests.
With no resolution reached amid the relentless disruptions, the Rajya Sabha is slated to reconvene on December 18, underscoring the ongoing turmoil and fervent demands for a discussion on the alarming security breach within the Parliament premises.
