Chennai: Superstar Rajinikanth made headlines for his curt response when asked about the ongoing issue of women’s safety in Tamil Nadu, following the shocking sexual assault of a 19-year-old student at Chennai’s prestigious Anna University. The incident, which has sparked widespread protests and demands for justice, took place on December 23, when the student was attacked on the university campus.
At Chennai International Airport, Rajinikanth was speaking to the media before leaving for Thailand to continue shooting his upcoming film Coolie. While he engaged with journalists about his movie projects, he avoided commenting on the sensitive issue of women’s safety. When asked about the recent assault case, he responded, “Don’t ask me political questions,” in a stern tone, seemingly sidestepping the concerns raised by the public and media.
The assault has triggered an outcry in the state, particularly as the victim’s complaint detailed how she was dragged into a nearby shrub and assaulted by 37-year-old Gnanasekaran, a suspect currently under investigation. An all-women Special Investigation Team (SIT) of IPS officers has been formed to probe the case.
Rajinikanth’s refusal to comment on such a pressing social issue has drawn criticism from various quarters, especially given his immense influence in Tamil Nadu and his active involvement in social matters in the past. His comment has raised questions about how public figures should respond to critical issues concerning public safety and women’s rights.
Amid the controversy, Rajinikanth did provide an update on his film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures. He shared that 70% of the film’s shooting had been completed and mentioned that the next shooting schedule would take place from January 13 to January 28.
