Jaipur: The crisis over contaminated cough syrup in Rajasthan has worsened, with two more children from Sikar falling unconscious after consuming medication prescribed by a local doctor. Both children are now in critical condition at the ICU of JK Lone Hospital in Jaipur.

The children had developed cough and cold on September 16 and were treated at Hatheeda Primary Health Centre, where they were prescribed a syrup containing Dextromethorphan. According to their families, both lost consciousness shortly after taking the medication.

This incident comes amid a growing health emergency in the state, where three children have died from suspected cough syrup toxicity, and two others remain under intensive care. Neighboring Madhya Pradesh has reported nine child deaths linked to similar syrups.

In response, the Rajasthan government has halted the distribution of all 19 medicines produced by Jaipur-based Kaysons Pharma pending further investigation. The state has also suspended State Drug Controller Rajaram Sharma for allegedly influencing decisions related to pharmaceutical quality standards. Government records reveal that since 2012, over 10,000 samples from Kaysons Pharma were tested, with 42 failing to meet quality norms.

The Union Government has reiterated its advisory against administering cough syrups containing Dextromethorphan to children below four years of age.

Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma has ordered a high-level investigation, directing swift action against those responsible. An expert committee will assess the safety of the affected products and conduct a detailed examination of the suspected adulteration. Health Minister Gajendra Singh emphasized the need for all necessary measures to safeguard public health and ensure accountability in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Officials have confirmed that distribution of all cough syrups containing Dextromethorphan has been temporarily suspended statewide as a precautionary measure.
