Mumbai: As speculation grows over a possible alliance between Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT), Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has revealed that the BJP is still in touch with MNS chief Raj Thackeray — but stopped short of confirming any formal tie-up.

“We have spoken to Raj Thackeray before the Lok Sabha elections 2024, before the Assembly elections, and we will speak to him before the corporation elections as well. But I cannot tell you now what the outcome of those talks will be,” Fadnavis said while addressing an event.

Praising Raj Thackeray’s unique political positioning, Fadnavis said, “Raj is like an open university. He has his own statute. Who will or will not get a degree from such an open university cannot be predicted.” The comment, though cryptic, hinted at Raj’s political independence and unpredictable alliances.

Fadnavis further remarked, “Those with an open statute can have their own laws and can decide whether to go with anyone. There is hardly any difference between the BJP and the MNS,” suggesting an ideological overlap without committing to a pre-poll or post-poll alliance.

Civic Polls on the Horizon

Speaking on the upcoming local body elections in Maharashtra, Fadnavis underscored their grassroots significance. “Corporation elections are always about the party workers. So every party feels it should contest more seats,” he said. He added, “Today, I cannot tell whether there will be an alliance or not. And there are three of us in the ‘Mahayuti’ — BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction).”
