Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren made explosive allegations on Monday, accusing the Raj Bhawan of involvement in his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case. His remarks came as the state assembly convened a special session, with Chief Minister Champai Soren moving a confidence motion in the 81-member state Assembly.
Champai Soren, who assumed office after Hemant Soren’s arrest, rallied support with the slogan “Hemant hai to himmat hai” (If Hemant Soren is there, we have courage). The political atmosphere was charged as Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) MLAs welcomed Hemant Soren to the House with enthusiastic slogans of ‘Hemant Soren Jindabad’ and ‘Hamara Neta Kaisa Ho Hemant Soren Jaisa Ho’ (Our leader should be like Hemant Soren) upon his arrival.
The return of forty MLAs of the JMM-led alliance, who had been sent to Hyderabad amid fears of horse-trading, further boosted the ruling coalition’s confidence ahead of the trust vote. With 47 MLAs in the Assembly, the coalition stands strong, with support from Congress, RJD, and the lone CPI(ML) legislator, Vinod Singh.
Hemant Soren vehemently denied any wrongdoing, declaring his willingness to resign from politics if any records of his ownership of 8.3 acres of land were presented. He also pointed fingers at the Raj Bhawan, alleging its involvement in his arrest, a claim that sparked further controversy and speculation.
In response, Chief Minister Champai Soren accused the BJP of attempting to destabilize the democratically elected government in Jharkhand, underscoring the political tensions surrounding the trust vote.
As the assembly session progressed, legislators began protesting during the Governor’s speech, reflecting the intensity of the political standoff and the stakes involved in the confidence motion.
