In a major political row, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged massive discrepancies in Maharashtra’s electoral rolls during the 2024 assembly elections. Gandhi claimed that 39 lakh voters were added within just five months, a number exceeding the total electorate of Himachal Pradesh.

Addressing a press conference alongside Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) MP Supriya Sule, Gandhi accused the Election Commission of failing to address anomalies in voter lists.

“In five years between the 2019 assembly polls and the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, 32 lakh voters were added. But within just five months between the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, 39 lakh voters were included. The question is, who are these voters?” Gandhi asked.

He further alleged that a significant number of voters had been “suddenly created” in Maharashtra and demanded transparency from the Election Commission.

Responding to the allegations, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis dismissed them as “cover fire” to distract from the Congress party’s declining political standing.

“The Election Commission has already answered these questions. Rahul Gandhi is trying to create a false narrative ahead of the Delhi election results. If he continues to deceive himself with lies, his party’s revival will remain impossible,” Fadnavis remarked.

The ruling NDA, comprising the BJP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction), secured a landslide victory in the Maharashtra assembly elections, winning 235 out of 288 seats. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), which includes Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), suffered a major defeat, securing only 49 seats.
