Mumbai: Russian President Vladimir Putin began his much-anticipated two-day visit to India on Thursday, marking his first trip to New Delhi in four years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed him at Delhi’s Palam Airport, where the two leaders greeted each other warmly before heading to the PM’s residence for a private interaction.

The highlight of the day will be the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit at Hyderabad House, where PM Modi and President Putin are expected to discuss an expansive agenda with a strong focus on defence and economic cooperation.
Defence Deals Expected to Dominate Talks
According to official sources, India and Russia are likely to finalise nearly 10 inter-governmental agreements along with over 15 commercial MoUs. Defence cooperation remains the centrepiece of the visit.

Russia continues to be India’s largest defence supplier, and the summit is expected to shape the next decade of military collaboration.
Economic and Strategic Cooperation Beyond Defence
Aside from the defence basket, several agreements are likely across priority sectors such as:
- Fertiliser supply
- Connectivity & shipping corridors
- Healthcare partnerships
- Energy and nuclear cooperation
Officials expect a substantial push to enhance bilateral trade volumes, with both sides aiming to reduce logistical barriers and boost long-term economic ties.
Symbolic Diplomacy & Warmth
Putin received a traditional welcome at the airport with cultural performances reflecting India’s hospitality. In a personal gesture, PM Modi gifted him a Russian translation of the Bhagavad Gita, underscoring the cultural warmth between the two nations. A private dinner hosted by PM Modi further set the stage for high-level bilateral engagement.
