New Delhi: BJP MP Arun Govil on Thursday called on the Union Government to introduce a nationwide mandate requiring CCTV cameras in mosques and madrasas, stating that modern security standards should apply equally across all major religious and public institutions.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Govil stressed that his proposal must not be viewed through a religious lens but as a critical step toward strengthening national security. He argued that surveillance systems have already become a norm in temples, churches, gurdwaras, educational institutions, hospitals, markets and public facilities across the country — contributing significantly to crime prevention and public safety.
Govil said that despite being important community hubs, many mosques and madrasas remain outside the ambit of such surveillance, creating what he described as “avoidable security gaps.” He urged Parliament to consider uniform safety norms across all religious spaces to ensure equal protection for every citizen.
He added that several countries have adopted similar practices, noting that CCTV systems operate in Mecca and in religious educational institutions in Saudi Arabia. “If these places of global religious importance can implement such measures for security,” Govil asked, “why can’t India adopt the same standards?”
