Undeterred by clashes with police and security measures at the Punjab-Haryana border, protesting farmers resumed their march towards Delhi on Wednesday, signaling a renewed determination to press for their demands despite facing significant obstacles.

The ‘Delhi Chalo’ march, spearheaded by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, saw hundreds of tractor trolleys lined up at Shambhu on the Punjab-Haryana border as farmers persisted in their journey towards the capital. Despite a heavy security presence, including concrete barricades and dug-up roads, the farmers remained resolute in their pursuit.

Wednesday’s march echoed the tumultuous scenes of the previous day, marked by tear gas, water cannons, and clashes with police. In their efforts to impede the farmers’ progress, police personnel once again resorted to firing tear gas, intensifying the confrontation at the barricades.

Meanwhile, in Delhi and its satellite towns, traffic congestion persisted for the second consecutive day as expressways became paralyzed by traffic restrictions and heavy police barricading. With farmers nearing the capital, authorities are anticipated to heighten security measures at the borders, further complicating the commute for residents.

The ongoing protests draw parallels to the widespread demonstrations witnessed during 2020-21, with thousands of farmers from Punjab encountering a formidable police presence as they strive to breach barricades en route to Delhi. The Haryana Police, steadfast in their resolve to prevent the farmers’ entry into the state, deployed a range of measures, including drones equipped with tear gas canisters, water cannons, and concrete barriers.

At the heart of the farmers’ demands lies the call for legislative guarantees on minimum support price (MSP) for crops and relief measures such as loan waivers. Despite inconclusive talks with the central government, the farmers remain steadfast in their pursuit of agrarian reforms and fair treatment.

As the ‘Delhi Chalo’ march presses forward, the resolve of the protesting farmers remains unwavering, underscoring their unwavering commitment to securing their rights and influencing policy decisions that impact their livelihoods.
