New Delhi: Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi has written to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, raising concerns over the alarming rise in human-wildlife conflicts in Wayanad and the delays in compensating victims’ families. Her letter, based on interactions with grieving families and local authorities, highlights the urgent need for enhanced protection measures and financial support for affected communities.
In her letter, Priyanka Gandhi noted that seven people lost their lives between December 27, 2024, and February 12, 2025, due to wildlife attacks, causing widespread fear and suffering among residents. She acknowledged local authorities’ efforts but pointed out the lack of adequate funds for essential protective measures.
She stressed the urgent need for increased funding to equip Wayanad with thermal drones, CCTV cameras, radio collars, and RRT vehicles to monitor animal movement. Additionally, she called for the upgradation of the Animal Hospice Centre at Sulthan Bathery and immediate repairs of ineffective elephant-proof trenches and barriers to prevent further tragedies.
Citing the tragic case of Sarojini, a tribal woman trampled by a wild elephant, Priyanka Gandhi revealed that the existing elephant-proof trench was poorly maintained, failing to serve its purpose. She urged the Kerala government to fast-track approvals for a new elephant-proof wall to protect vulnerable communities.
