Pakistan’s political landscape witnessed a significant development as two major parties, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), announced their decision to join forces and establish a coalition government at the center.

During a joint press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday evening, PML-N President and former Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the agreement, stating, “Both the parties have agreed on a power-sharing formula as we have the required number of seats in the National Assembly (NA) to form the government.”

After days of negotiations, it was decided that Shehbaz Sharif would be the joint candidate for Prime Minister, representing both PML-N and PPP, while PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari would be the joint candidate for the President’s slot, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.

Sharif highlighted that efforts were made to invite victorious independent candidates, who secured more than 100 seats, to form the government. However, with their inability to muster the required numbers, PML-N and PPP emerged as the primary contenders for coalition governance. Moreover, other parties such as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, the Pakistan Muslim League, and the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party pledged their support to the coalition initiative.

Anticipating challenges ahead, Sharif emphasized the coalition’s readiness to tackle obstacles collectively. He acknowledged the daunting road ahead but expressed confidence in the coalition’s ability to navigate and overcome challenges in unity.
