Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate the Pune Metro line on Sunday, September 29, 2024. The new Metro line will stretch between Shivajinagar District Court and Swargate, significantly enhancing the city’s public transport system. In addition to the inauguration, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stone for the upcoming Swargate-Katraj Metro stretch, as announced by Union Minister Murlidhar Mohol.
Mohol confirmed the news via X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Hon. PM Shri. Narendra Modi ji will be inaugurating the Shivajinagar District Court-Swargate stretch of Pune Metro and laying the foundation stone of the Swargate-Katraj stretch virtually, on 29th September.”
The inauguration comes after a previous visit scheduled for September 26 was canceled due to heavy rains that disrupted preparations at the SP College ground in Pune. Following the cancellation, Supriya Sule, the working president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), made headlines by mocking the situation, suggesting that PM Modi could simply conduct the inauguration online since he has done so for similar projects multiple times before.
In a more assertive tone, Pune NCP (SP) chief Prashant Jagtap warned that if the government failed to inaugurate the Civil Court-Swargate Metro line promptly, MVA leaders would take the initiative to open it to the public. Jagtap claimed that the Metro route was ready but had been kept closed, awaiting the Prime Minister’s official inauguration.
The Pune Metro project aims to provide a reliable and efficient public transport option for the city’s residents, easing congestion and promoting sustainable urban mobility. The anticipation surrounding the project underscores its significance for Pune’s infrastructural development.
