Muzaffarpur: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced that the Union government will seek UNESCO World Heritage recognition for Chhath Puja, marking a significant cultural milestone for India’s traditional festivals. Addressing a massive election rally in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, ahead of the upcoming state assembly polls, PM Modi said, “It’s my first public gathering after Chhath Puja. Our government is making efforts to include the Chhath Puja in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.”

The Prime Minister also launched a scathing attack on the Congress and its ally Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), accusing them of disrespecting the faith and sentiments of millions of devotees. He said, “The women who observe such a long fast without water… the women who stand in the Ganga Ji and offer arghya to Surya Dev — in the eyes of RJD–Congress, they are doing a drama.”

PM Modi further questioned, “Will the mothers and sisters of Bihar tolerate this insult to Chhathi Maiya? I know that no person from Bihar can forget this insult to Chhathi Maiya.”

Chhath Puja 2025, which concluded on October 28 with the Usha Arghya, is one of the most revered festivals in India, especially celebrated with deep devotion across Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya, the four-day festival highlights gratitude, purity, and harmony with nature.

The announcement comes as Bihar gears up for its two-phase assembly elections scheduled for November 6 and 11, with results to be declared on November 14.
