Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in Melbourne during the second leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation across trade, defence, technology and people-to-people ties.
The bilateral meeting followed PM Modi’s arrival in Australia, where he received a warm welcome from members of the Indian diaspora. Cultural performances celebrating the shared heritage of India and Australia marked the beginning of the Prime Minister’s visit.
Leaders Review Expanding Bilateral Partnership
During the meeting, PM Modi highlighted the growing importance of India-Australia relations amid global economic and geopolitical challenges. Referring to disruptions in supply chains and energy markets, he said the two countries have emerged as “natural and trusted partners” capable of strengthening regional stability and economic resilience.
The Prime Minister noted that the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) signed in 2022 has significantly boosted commercial ties. He said the agreement has helped expand market access for businesses in both countries and contributed to a sharp rise in Indian exports to Australia.
Trade, Defence and Emerging Technologies on Agenda
The discussions between the two leaders covered a broad range of sectors, including defence cooperation, investment, education, mobility, critical and emerging technologies, and sports collaboration.
Officials said both governments are looking to deepen strategic engagement as India and Australia continue to strengthen cooperation under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework.
Uranium Supply Agreement Under Discussion
Reports in Australian media suggest that both countries are also examining the possibility of finalising arrangements related to uranium exports to India. While India and Australia signed a civil nuclear cooperation agreement in 2014, uranium supplies have remained limited due to safeguards ensuring the material is used only for peaceful civilian purposes.
If concluded, the agreement could further expand cooperation in the energy sector.
Indian Community Gives Grand Welcome
PM Modi’s visit also featured several cultural programmes organised by the Indian community in Australia. Among the highlights was a performance by the Australian-India Orchestra, which presented “Maa Tujhe Salaam.”
Sharing the performance on social media, the Prime Minister praised the musicians for showcasing the cultural bonds between the two countries and noted the global popularity of “Vande Mataram” as India commemorates its 150th anniversary.
He also attended a musical performance featuring Australia’s traditional Didgeridoo alongside India’s Tabla, describing it as a reflection of the deep cultural connection shared by both nations.
Australia Visit Follows Indonesia Leg
Before arriving in Australia, PM Modi concluded a three-day visit to Indonesia, where he held bilateral talks with President Prabowo Subianto. The two countries signed multiple agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in sectors including maritime security and critical minerals.
Australia is the second stop on the Prime Minister’s three-nation tour, which will conclude with an official visit to New Zealand. The visit is expected to further strengthen India’s engagement with key partners in the Indo-Pacific region.
