Mumbai: In a historic stride for India’s aviation and infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), calling it a landmark achievement in India’s journey toward a Viksit Bharat (developed India). The airport is set to become Asia’s largest connectivity hub, redefining Mumbai’s role on the global map.

Addressing the audience, PM Modi said, “Now Mumbai has a new airport (NMIA), which will be Asia’s largest connectivity hub. Today, the city also has a fully underground metro to facilitate easy travel across Mumbai. Launching an underground metro with such careful construction in a city like Mumbai is a big achievement.”

The Prime Minister highlighted the airport’s iconic lotus-shaped design, reflecting India’s rich heritage and culture, and emphasised its potential to boost international trade and enhance access to global markets. “The airport will boost trade with other countries and enhance access to the global market,” he said.

PM Modi underscored the government’s focus on expanding air connectivity over the last decade. “In 2014, I had said it was my dream that even people wearing hawai chappals (slippers) should be able to travel by air. To fulfil this, it was important to set up new airports across the country,” he stated.

He noted that India had only 74 airports in 2014, and today that number has more than doubled to 160, reflecting inclusive development that connects smaller towns and remote regions to the national aviation network.

Wednesday also witnessed the launch of Mumbai Metro Line 3, a fully underground line, marking a transformative day for the city’s infrastructure. PM Modi said, “These projects are a testament to India’s growing urban capability, setting a new benchmark for connectivity, sustainability, and modern governance.”
