Mumbai: In a historic moment for Indian aviation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, a state-of-the-art facility poised to transform Mumbai into the country’s first dual-airport hub. The new airport is set to ease congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and significantly enhance passenger and cargo capacity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
During the ceremony, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presented PM Modi with a scale model of NMIA, symbolising the state’s growing prowess in infrastructure development. Adding a historical touch, Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar presented a replica of India’s first-ever aircraft, attributed to Shivkar Bapuji Talpade, who reportedly flew an unmanned aircraft named Marut Sakha in 1895 — eight years before the Wright Brothers’ first flight. While Talpade’s experiment is rooted in local accounts, there is no verified photographic or scientific evidence confirming sustained flight.
The inauguration witnessed the presence of several dignitaries, including Governor Acharya Devvrat, industrialist Gautam Adani, Union Minister for Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, and Maharashtra Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol. PM Modi was given a grand welcome before officially cutting the ribbon on the new airport.
The first phase of NMIA is designed to handle 20 million passengers per year, with future expansions planning four modern terminals and two parallel runways to accommodate up to 90 million passengers annually and 3.25 million metric tonnes of cargo.
Built with cutting-edge sustainable technology, NMIA aims to drastically reduce travel time across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region while reinforcing India’s ambitions as a global aviation hub. Strategically located near the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the upcoming Navi Mumbai Metro network, the airport promises seamless regional connectivity, making travel faster and more convenient for millions.
