Prime Minister Narendra Modi energized supporters at an election rally in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, September 28, as the region gears up for the third phase of Assembly Elections scheduled for October 1. The Prime Minister’s speech was marked by strong critiques of the Congress party, its ally the National Conference, and the Mehbooba Mufti-led People’s Democratic Party (PDP), particularly addressing issues of terrorism and corruption.

Modi expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would form its government in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time with “full majority.” He stated, “The people of Jammu and Kashmir want the BJP government here. There has been a massive voter turnout in the recent two phases of elections in Jammu and Kashmir. It is certain that the BJP is going to form its first government with full majority in Jammu and Kashmir.”

He emphasized the significance of the election for the region, asserting, “For the first time, the government according to the wishes of the people of the Jammu region is going to be formed in Jammu and Kashmir. It is a place of temples. Do not leave this opportunity. The BJP government will solve all your problems,” he added.

Addressing the longstanding political dynasties in the region, Modi remarked that the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir are “tired of the three families,” referring to the Congress, National Conference, and PDP. He urged voters to reject what he described as a corrupt and discriminatory system that has historically plagued the region. “The people here want peace, a better future for their children, and that is why they want a BJP government,” he stated.

In a nod to national security, Modi recalled the anniversary of the 2016 Surgical Strike, which was a significant military operation against terrorist launch pads across the Line of Control. He declared, “In 2016, on September 28 night, the Surgical Strike was conducted. India had told the world that this is new India. Yeh ghar mein ghus kar maarta hai,” emphasizing India’s determination to combat terrorism. He further criticized the Congress party for allegedly asking for proof of the military operation and suggested that they align with “the Pakistani line” concerning the issue.

As the election date approaches, Modi’s assertions and aggressive campaigning aim to solidify the BJP’s position in a region that has experienced political upheaval and violence over the years. With rising voter turnout and a palpable sense of anticipation, the outcome of the upcoming elections could mark a significant turning point for Jammu and Kashmir.
