Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday made a strong appeal to India’s youth to enroll as voters as soon as they turn 18, calling the act of voting a cornerstone of a vibrant democracy and a key constitutional responsibility.
Speaking during the latest episode of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister linked the message to the spirit of the Constitution ahead of Republic Day. He said the coming days serve as a reminder of the values enshrined in the Constitution and the responsibility placed on every citizen to uphold them.
Highlighting the significance of National Voters’ Day, observed on January 25, the Prime Minister described voters as the foundation of democratic governance. He noted that while turning 18 is often seen as a routine phase of life, gaining the right to vote marks a defining moment for every Indian citizen.
PM Modi suggested that becoming a voter should be celebrated just like birthdays or other personal milestones. He proposed that families, neighbourhoods, villages, and communities come together to congratulate first-time voters, saying such gestures would help create awareness and reinforce the importance of electoral participation.
He also praised individuals and organisations who remain actively involved in the electoral process, especially those working at the grassroots level to ensure free, fair, and inclusive participation. According to him, these efforts play a crucial role in keeping democracy strong and responsive.
Reiterating his appeal to young citizens, the Prime Minister said registering as a voter fulfills the sense of duty expected by the Constitution and empowers youth to shape the nation’s future. Earlier in the day, he also reached out to young people and MY-Bharat volunteers, encouraging them to mark the moment they become voters as a proud achievement.
Calling voting both a privilege and a responsibility, PM Modi urged schools, colleges, and universities to recognise and celebrate students who register as voters for the first time. He emphasized that India’s youth possess a strong “can-do” attitude and can act as ambassadors to spread awareness about the importance of voting across society.
