Patna: A fresh political controversy has erupted after former Congress leader and ex-Union Minister Shakeel Ahmad launched a sharp attack on senior party figure Rahul Gandhi, branding him as the “most insecure leader” in Indian politics. Ahmad’s remarks have triggered strong reactions across party lines, intensifying the already simmering internal debate within the Congress.
Speaking in a televised interview, Ahmad—who resigned from the Congress following the Bihar Assembly elections—alleged that the party has become an uncomfortable space for senior and experienced leaders. According to him, leaders with long political careers now struggle to function with dignity and are frequently sidelined or humiliated.
Ahmad also questioned the Congress leadership’s handling of the Bihar elections, alleging serious organisational failures. He claimed there was no visible attempt at introspection after the party’s poor performance, raising doubts about whether lessons would ever be learned. In a particularly pointed remark, he alleged that while Mallikarjun Kharge holds the post of Congress president, real authority rests elsewhere. “Kharge is only a nominal president, and all key decisions are taken by Rahul Gandhi,” he claimed.
Further criticising Rahul Gandhi’s leadership style, Ahmad alleged that he finds it difficult to work alongside senior and influential leaders. He claimed that Rahul prefers situations where his authority is unquestioned and tends to distance himself when he does not feel fully in control.
Ahmad also targeted Rahul Gandhi’s political campaigns, including the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), claiming it had failed to gain acceptance even within the Muslim community. He alleged that many Congress leaders are hesitant to publicly associate with Muslim leaders or communities, fearing political backlash and loss of votes. According to him, Rahul Gandhi’s “Save the Constitution” movement has also failed to make any meaningful impact at the grassroots level.
The remarks drew an immediate response from the Congress. Bihar Congress spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwari dismissed Ahmad’s allegations, claiming they were motivated by personal ambition. He alleged that Ahmad was upset over not being considered for a Rajya Sabha seat and warned that the party would not tolerate what he described as pressure tactics.
Political reactions extended beyond the Congress. Leaders from rival parties seized the opportunity to attack Rahul Gandhi. BJP leaders echoed Ahmad’s criticism, alleging a lack of internal democracy within the Congress and questioning Rahul Gandhi’s seriousness as a leader. JD(U) leaders also remarked that Ahmad’s statements had exposed internal contradictions within the Congress.
