Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed Parliament’s approval of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Bill, describing it as a landmark step that will reshape India’s technology and clean energy ecosystem. The bill received approval from both Houses, marking a significant policy shift in the country’s civil nuclear framework.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister thanked Members of Parliament for backing the legislation and said the move would strengthen India’s future-ready infrastructure. He highlighted the role of nuclear energy in supporting advanced technologies, green manufacturing and emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, while also positioning India as a global leader in clean energy solutions.

The SHANTI Bill, cleared by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday and the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, seeks to allow greater private participation in the civil nuclear sector, which has so far remained largely under government control. The government believes this step will attract investment, boost innovation and create new opportunities for skilled professionals and young entrepreneurs.

During the debate, Union Minister of State Dr Jitendra Singh addressed concerns raised by lawmakers, stressing that safety standards, national sovereignty and public accountability would remain paramount. He assured the House that the expansion of the nuclear sector would be carried out under strict regulatory oversight, without compromising public interest.

Dr Singh said the legislation reflects India’s growing scientific confidence and readiness to play a responsible role in the global transition towards cleaner energy. He added that the bill balances technological advancement with transparency and safeguards.
