Owaisi Kabir Alliance Bengal 2026: AIMIM AJUP Tie Up May Impact Vote Share

In a major political development ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, Humayun Kabir has officially announced an alliance between his Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi.

The alliance is being seen as a game-changing move that could significantly impact vote dynamics, especially in minority-dominated constituencies across the state.

Why Did Kabir Call Owaisi ‘Bada Bhai’?

While announcing the partnership, Humayun Kabir described Owaisi as his “bada bhai” (elder brother) and made it clear that both parties will contest the elections together as a united front.

Kabir said, “Aam Janata Unnayan Party aur AIMIM party dono milkar chunav ladenge,” confirming a joint electoral strategy. He further added that he would follow Owaisi’s guidance throughout the campaign, underlining strong coordination between the two leaders.

How Many Seats Will They Contest?

Kabir revealed that his party plans to announce 182 to 192 candidates, indicating a large-scale electoral push. At the same time, AIMIM is also expected to declare its candidates and constituencies separately.

This suggests a broad and aggressive strategy aimed at expanding influence across West Bengal.

Where Will Owaisi Campaign in Bengal?

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is expected to play a central role in campaigning. Kabir claimed that Owaisi will participate in at least 20 rallies across key regions, including:

  • Murshidabad
  • Malda
  • Birbhum
  • Uttar Dinajpur
  • Asansol
  • Kolkata

The first mega rally is scheduled for April 1 in Berhampore, where Kabir expects a massive turnout.

Is This Alliance Long-Term?

Kabir made it clear that this partnership is not limited to the 2026 elections. He said the alliance would continue in future political battles as well, stating that it will remain intact “as long as I am in politics.”

Why Is the Opposition Worried?

The alliance has already triggered sharp reactions from opposition leaders. Members of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) have criticised the move, warning that it could divide votes and weaken so-called secular forces.

TMC MP Saugata Roy described the development as a “bad” sign and claimed it could isolate sections of voters.

What Does This Mean for Bengal Politics?

The Owaisi-Kabir alliance could reshape electoral equations in West Bengal by:

  • Consolidating minority votes in select regions
  • Creating a third political force beyond TMC and BJP
  • Increasing competition in closely contested seats

However, it could also lead to vote splitting, which may indirectly benefit rival parties.

What Happens Next?

With candidate announcements and rallies set to begin soon, the alliance is gearing up for an intense campaign. All eyes are now on whether this new political partnership will emerge as a decisive force—or simply alter the balance in favour of other parties.
