In a dramatic political switch just weeks before elections, former BJP leader and Assam minister Nandita Gorlosa has joined the Indian National Congress after being denied a ticket for the upcoming Assembly polls.
Sudden Exit from BJP
Gorlosa resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party and her ministerial post with immediate effect. In her resignation letter addressed to state BJP chief Dilip Saikia, she formally stepped down from the party’s primary membership, thanking the leadership for the opportunity to serve.
Congress Welcomes Gorlosa
Soon after her resignation, Gorlosa joined Congress in the presence of senior leaders, including Nirmal Langthasa. In a significant move, Langthasa agreed to vacate his claim over the Haflong constituency to make way for her candidature.
Congress leaders expressed confidence in Gorlosa, stating that she has been a strong voice for the people of Dima Hasao and has consistently stood by her principles.
Will Contest from Haflong Seat
The party confirmed that Gorlosa will be fielded from the Haflong constituency. Formal announcement of her candidature is expected shortly, as part of Congress’s broader election strategy.
Political Attack on BJP Leadership
The Congress also took a swipe at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, alleging that Gorlosa faced setbacks in the BJP due to her stand on key issues. The party accused the state leadership of prioritising corporate interests over tribal land concerns.
Election Battle Heats Up
The Assam Assembly elections for all 126 seats will be held in a single phase on April 9, as announced by the Election Commission of India, with counting scheduled for May 4.
Congress is set to contest 100 seats and has formed alliances with several regional and Left parties, aiming to strengthen its position in the state.
Gorlosa’s sudden switch has added fresh excitement and unpredictability to the Assam poll battle, with political observers closely watching its impact on voter sentiment.
