In a resounding expression of concern, more than 600 lawyers hailing from various corners of India, including prominent figures like senior advocate Harish Salve and Bar Council of India chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, have penned a collective missive addressed to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud. The letter, a poignant call to action, highlights the perceived threats looming over the integrity of the judiciary and condemns what the lawyers describe as concerted efforts to undermine its sanctity.
The crux of their concern lies in the insidious tactics employed by what they term as a “vested interest group,” aimed at manipulating judicial processes, influencing court decisions, and tarnishing the pristine reputation of the judiciary with unfounded allegations and political machinations.
Particularly alarming is the assertion made in the letter regarding the blatant attempts to sway court decisions, especially in cases entangled with allegations of political corruption. The lawyers assert that these efforts, driven by ulterior motives and political agendas, pose a grave threat to the impartiality and credibility of the judiciary.
A disturbing revelation contained within the letter pertains to the fabrication of false narratives, strategically crafted to paint a distorted picture of the judiciary’s functioning. These narratives, often invoking a mythical ‘golden age’ of the courts, are purportedly designed to sway judicial outcomes and erode public trust in the institution of justice.
The lawyers lament the emergence of what they term as a “concocted theory of bench fixing,” wherein nefarious attempts are made to influence the composition of judicial benches and cast unwarranted aspersions on the integrity of judges. Such actions, they contend, not only undermine the rule of law but also strike at the very heart of justice.
