Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has responded with humor and practicality to the recent comments made by Pakistan Punjab CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who blamed India’s Punjab for contributing to smog affecting Lahore. Mann, while advocating for a collective approach to solve air pollution issues, pointed out the absurdity of the blame game, suggesting that Punjab’s pollution seems to be “circulating in a loop,” as both Delhi and Lahore have blamed Punjab for worsening air quality.

Mann’s remarks come in the wake of growing concerns over stubble burning in northern India, particularly in Punjab and Haryana. This annual practice, which occurs after the paddy harvest in October and November, releases large volumes of smoke into the atmosphere. Farmers resort to burning crop residue to clear fields for the Rabi season, a practice that significantly contributes to air pollution in surrounding regions, including Delhi.

The close timing between the paddy harvest and the sowing of the next crop puts immense pressure on farmers, leading them to resort to stubble burning as an expedient solution, despite its severe environmental consequences.

In his address, Mann emphasized that Punjab is not the sole contributor to the air pollution crisis. He pointed out that neighboring states such as Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh also play significant roles in the problem. He called for a joint effort from all affected states to effectively address and mitigate the air quality crisis, instead of passing the blame.

Mann’s response highlights the need for a cooperative approach to environmental issues, as the pollution crisis in northern India and neighboring regions continues to impact public health and the environment.
