In a significant diplomatic development, India reiterated its stance on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar voicing New Delhi’s support for an early ceasefire in Gaza. Jaishankar’s remarks came during a meeting with Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan in Riyadh on Wednesday.

India, which has consistently condemned terrorism, called for a resolution to the conflict based on international humanitarian law. Jaishankar highlighted that while India condemns the October 7 terror attacks by Hamas, it stressed that any response must uphold the principles of humanitarian law and work toward protecting innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.

“The situation in West Asia, particularly the conflict in Gaza, is a matter of deep concern for us,” Jaishankar remarked in his opening statement. “While we condemn acts of terrorism and hostage-taking, we are deeply pained by the continuing loss of innocent lives. Any response must be in line with international humanitarian law.”

Jaishankar also reaffirmed India’s long-standing position on the Israel-Palestine issue, advocating for a peaceful resolution through a two-state solution. He underscored that peace and stability in the region can only be achieved through dialogue and a fair resolution to the Palestinian issue.

During the meeting, Jaishankar praised Saudi Arabia’s role as an “important force for stability” in the West Asian region, emphasizing the kingdom’s crucial diplomatic efforts in addressing regional challenges. Both nations agreed on the need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict and discussed ways to contribute to humanitarian efforts in Gaza.

India’s call for an early ceasefire aligns with its consistent diplomatic efforts to balance its relations with both Israel and Palestine, advocating for peace and the protection of civilian lives in the region.
