New Delhi: In a candid critique of the opposition, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that several opposition leaders are talented and excellent orators, but they often do not get an opportunity to speak in Parliament because of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi. The remarks were made during a tea meeting restricted to leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), with no opposition MPs present.
Speaking at the meeting, PM Modi highlighted a recurring problem in Parliament. “Opposition MPs are sometimes forced to disrupt proceedings because they are better speakers than Rahul Gandhi. Yet, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha does not want to encourage them,” he said, pointing to repeated disruptions in the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
The Prime Minister’s comments come in the backdrop of heated proceedings on Wednesday, when opposition leaders raised strong objections to three bills tabled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The bills — Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025 — propose removing a prime minister, chief minister, or union minister from office if they are arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days in a serious criminal case.
The debate escalated when some opposition MPs tore the papers of the bills and reportedly threw them towards Amit Shah, prompting a tense moment in the House. The incident underscores the continuing friction between the ruling NDA and opposition parties over the legislative agenda and parliamentary conduct.
