“Occupy India’s Northeast if Pakistan is Attacked”: Ex-Bangladeshi General Sparks Outrage with Wild War Rhetoric

In a highly provocative and controversial statement, retired Bangladeshi Major General ALM Fazlur Rahman has called for Bangladesh to invade and occupy India’s seven northeastern states if New Delhi launches military action against Pakistan in response to the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which left 26 people dead.

Rahman, who once headed the Bangladesh Rifles (now Border Guard Bangladesh) and is known to be close to Bangladesh’s current chief advisor Muhammad Yunus, made the incendiary remarks on Facebook in Bengali, calling for a joint military arrangement with China to support such a move.

“If India attacks Pakistan, Bangladesh will have to occupy seven states of northeast India. In this regard, I feel it is necessary to start discussions on joint military arrangement with China,” Rahman wrote.

His statements come at a delicate moment for India-Bangladesh relations, which have recently shown signs of strain. Tensions escalated after former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought asylum in India amid rising fears of religious persecution against Hindu minorities in the country.

Rahman’s remarks have added fuel to an already volatile atmosphere, especially after Muhammad Yunus, during a March visit to China, made strategic comments about India’s northeastern region:

“The seven states of India, the eastern part of India, are called the seven sisters. They are a landlocked region of India. They have no way to reach out to the ocean,” Yunus said, adding that Bangladesh is the “only guardian of the ocean” in the region and could become “an extension of the Chinese economy.”

Such rhetoric has drawn criticism from Indian analysts and diplomats who view these comments as “irresponsible,” particularly at a time when South Asian regional stability is under increased pressure from external powers.
