Washington: The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has stirred a global political storm after the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prestigious honour to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, overlooking former U.S. President Donald Trump, who was widely speculated to be a strong contender for his “peace deal initiatives.”
Announcing the decision, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, Chair of the Nobel Committee, praised Machado for “keeping the flame of democracy alive in Venezuela amid repression and adversity.”
Born on October 7, 1967, Maria Corina Machado has long been a fearless voice against authoritarianism in Venezuela. As the founder of Súmate in 2002 — an organisation promoting electoral transparency — and later the Vente Venezuela party in 2013, she has been instrumental in mobilising citizens for democratic reforms and human rights.
Despite facing arrests, threats, and bans from political office, Machado has remained a symbol of courage and resistance in Latin America. Her Nobel recognition, the committee said, celebrates “her unwavering dedication to peace, democracy, and human rights.”
However, the announcement triggered an immediate backlash from the White House, which criticised the Nobel Committee for “politicising” the Peace Prize.
In a sharp statement on X (formerly Twitter), White House spokesman Steven Cheung said:
“President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian, and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains with the sheer force of his will.”
Cheung further added: “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
The Trump campaign has claimed that the former president’s efforts in Middle East peace accords and his role in conflict resolution talks warranted global recognition.
Meanwhile, supporters of Maria Corina Machado hailed the decision as a victory for democracy and human rights, marking a milestone for Venezuelan civil society in its ongoing struggle against dictatorship.
