Mumbai: To ease daily traffic pressure and improve safety on city roads, the Mumbai Traffic Police have announced new time-based restrictions on the movement of large vehicles within the city limits. The revised rules will come into force from February 1.

According to traffic officials, large vehicles will not be permitted to enter Mumbai during peak travel hours, which are from 8 am to 11 am and from 5 pm to 9 pm. These time periods see maximum traffic movement, and the presence of slow-moving large vehicles often causes delays, congestion, and safety risks for other road users.

Authorities said the decision has been taken due to the growing number of vehicles and ongoing construction work across Mumbai, which has reduced available road space. During peak hours, large vehicles make it difficult for commuters, two-wheeler riders, and pedestrians to move smoothly.

Stricter regulations have been introduced for South Mumbai. Under the new order, entry of large vehicles, including luxury buses, will be restricted in South Mumbai from 7 am until 12 midnight. Movement will be allowed only during late-night hours between 12 midnight and 7 am. However, passenger luxury buses will not be allowed to enter South Mumbai even during these permitted hours.

The restriction on the Eastern Freeway will continue at all times, with only regular buses allowed to use the route.

Vehicles carrying essential supplies such as milk, vegetables, bread, drinking water, petrol, diesel, and kerosene have been exempted from the new rules. Emergency services, school buses, and government or semi-government vehicles will also be allowed to operate without time restrictions.
