Nitesh Rane Eid vs Ram Navami Row: Maharashtra Clashes Trigger Political Controversy

Amid rising communal tension in parts of Maharashtra, state minister Nitesh Rane has stirred a major political controversy by alleging unequal enforcement of rules during religious festivals. His remarks come after recent clashes during Ram Navami celebrations triggered concern across the state.

Rane Alleges Discrimination in Festival Rules

Speaking strongly on the issue, Rane claimed that there was no disturbance from the Hindu community during Eid celebrations, but alleged that Ram Navami processions faced obstruction and violence.

He said, “During Eid, no Hindu community members threw stones or created trouble. But when Ram Navami celebrations began, people were stopped from hoisting saffron flags, stones were thrown, and attacks were carried out on devotees.”

Rane further demanded that authorities apply the same rules during Ram Navami that were enforced during Eid al-Fitr, calling for equal treatment of all communities.

Stone Pelting Incident in Shrirampur Raises Tension

The controversy intensified after a violent incident on March 26 in Shrirampur. A Ram Navami procession reportedly came under attack when it passed near a dargah, leading to sudden stone pelting.

At least two people were injured in the incident and were rushed to hospital. One of the victims reportedly suffered severe injuries, including the loss of an eye.

However, there are conflicting versions of how the violence started. While some locals claim the stone pelting began from within the procession, others allege it originated from nearby areas.

Police have registered a case against a cleric linked to the dargah and around a dozen unidentified individuals. Officials confirmed that CCTV footage is being analysed to identify those involved and determine the exact sequence of events.

Malvani Dispute Adds to Mumbai Tension

In another incident, tension was reported in Mumbai’s Malvani area on March 25 over the installation of saffron flags ahead of Ram Navami.

The dispute escalated after objections were raised regarding the placement of flags near a mosque. A viral video from the area showed heated arguments between two groups, with a large crowd gathering in a narrow lane.

Senior police officials quickly intervened to control the situation and prevent violence. While no major injuries were reported, the incident has intensified the debate over whether law enforcement is acting fairly during religious events.

Police Increase Vigil Across Sensitive Areas

Following these back-to-back incidents, authorities have stepped up security in sensitive areas across Maharashtra. Police presence has been increased to prevent further clashes and maintain law and order.
