India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has welcomed the recent ceasefire understanding between the United States and Iran, calling it a constructive step towards reducing tensions in West Asia. The ministry expressed hope that the development would open the door for long-term peace and regional stability.
In its official response, the MEA reiterated India’s consistent stand that diplomacy and dialogue remain the only sustainable path to resolving conflicts in the region.
“We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia. As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict,” the statement read.
Focus on Hormuz Strait and Global Trade
Highlighting global economic concerns, the MEA stressed the need to ensure smooth and secure maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for international oil shipments. The ministry noted that disruptions in this corridor have far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and trade.
“The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks. We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz,” it added.
Trump Announces Temporary Pause in Military Action
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced a temporary halt in planned military operations against Iran, offering a two-week window aimed at easing tensions and encouraging diplomatic engagement. The announcement was made on his Truth Social platform just ahead of a previously anticipated escalation deadline.
Describing the move as a “double-sided ceasefire,” Trump indicated that both Washington and Tehran are expected to refrain from aggressive actions during this period.
Iran’s Role and Strategic Developments
According to Trump, the decision to pause military action followed Iran’s willingness to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil transport. The waterway’s reopening is seen as a major factor in stabilising energy flows and calming markets.
He further claimed that the United States had already achieved its primary military objectives and revealed that Washington had received a 10-point proposal from Tehran addressing key areas of concern that had previously fueled tensions.
Uncertainty Remains Beyond Ceasefire Window
While the current pause signals a possible shift towards negotiations, uncertainty still looms over the situation after the two-week period ends. Observers believe the coming days will be critical in determining whether the ceasefire evolves into a more permanent diplomatic breakthrough or if tensions resurface.
