Washington, D.C.: In a significant development, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that all immigrants, including those with valid visas, green cards, or work permits, must carry their documentation at all times. The new policy, outlined in a statement issued on Friday, mandates that noncitizens aged 18 and older must be ready to provide proof of their legal status when requested.

The statement emphasized the administration’s commitment to strengthening enforcement, with the DHS warning that “there will be no sanctuary for noncompliance.” The directive aligns with a recent U.S. district court ruling that allows the Trump administration to implement a policy requiring individuals in the U.S. illegally to register with the federal government and carry documentation.

According to the notification, individuals already holding valid visas such as H-1B, employment authorization documents, green cards, border crossing cards, or I-94 admission records will not be affected by the process, as they are already registered. However, even these “already registered” foreign nationals, including Indian workers and international students, will be required to carry their documents continuously.

Children of immigrants will also be impacted, as they must re-register and submit their fingerprints within 30 days of turning 14.

In a ruling by U.S. District Judge Trevor McFadden, appointed by President Donald Trump, groups challenging the policy, including the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and the United Farm Workers of America, were found not to have standing to bring the lawsuit, allowing the DHS rule to proceed.
