Exciting news for commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) as the much-anticipated Roll On/Roll Off (RoRo) ferry service between Bhayandar and Vasai officially began its pilot run on Tuesday. This service marks the second RoRo operation in the MMR, following the established route between Ferry Wharf and Mandwa.

The introduction of the Bhayandar-Vasai RoRo service is set to revolutionize travel between Thane and Palghar districts by drastically reducing the 30-kilometer road journey. RoRo ferries are renowned for their efficiency in transporting passengers, cars, and commercial vehicles, allowing vehicles to seamlessly roll on and off the vessel, making for a swift and convenient mode of transportation.

Operating eight times a day, the newly-launched service boasts a capacity to accommodate 100 passengers and 33 four-wheelers in a single trip. According to official statements, the fare structure for this service is set at Rs 30 for adult passengers, Rs 15 for children, and Rs 60 for two-wheelers per ride. Car owners can expect to pay Rs 180 for a one-way journey, while auto-rickshaws will be charged Rs 100.

Commenting on the inauguration of the service, Thane Member of Parliament Rajan Vichare highlighted its potential to significantly reduce travel time and mitigate pollution resulting from vehicular congestion. Vichare also hinted at the imminent launch of ferry services from additional jetties in Thane and other districts, further expanding the reach and accessibility of waterway transportation in the region.

With its convenience, affordability, and environmental benefits, the Bhayandar-Vasai RoRo ferry service promises to offer commuters a refreshing alternative for their daily travel needs, while also contributing to the broader goal of sustainable urban mobility in the MMR.
