Guwahati: In a significant step toward enhancing rail connectivity in the Northeast, the Central government has approved a new express train service between Agartala and Guwahati (Narangi), responding to long-standing demands from the people of Tripura. The move is being seen as a direct outcome of sustained efforts by West Tripura MP and former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, who had actively pursued the proposal with the Railway Ministry.

Announcing the development via social media on Sunday, Deb wrote, “Another achievement. I express my sincere gratitude and appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for approving the launch of a new rail service on the Agartala-Guwahati route, respecting the demands of the people of Tripura and prioritising passenger comfort.”

According media reports, the approval followed a key meeting held on April 22 in New Delhi, where Deb met with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to push for greater rail development in Tripura. During the meeting, Deb strongly emphasized the urgent need for improved connectivity between Agartala and major northeastern hubs like Guwahati, both for passenger movement and regional economic development.

Among the major points of discussion was the introduction of a direct express train connecting Agartala to Guwahati (Narangi), aimed at boosting tourism, trade, and daily commutes across the northeastern corridor. The Railway Ministry responded swiftly to the proposal, with a formal approval conveyed to Deb via an official communication.

Following the green signal, Deb thanked the Union Minister for what he termed a “swift and sensitive response” to the aspirations of the people of Tripura.

“The Railway Minister kept his word. I am thankful to him for honoring his assurance and delivering on the demand of the people in record time,” Deb said.

The newly approved train is expected to reduce travel time, facilitate business activity, and strengthen integration between Tripura and Assam, two crucial states in the region. With rising passenger demand on the route, the service is also likely to decongest existing trains and offer smoother connectivity options for travelers and traders alike.
