New Delhi: The political temperature in West Bengal has surged once again as senior BJP leader Amit Malviya launched a scathing attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding her resignation over the recent communal violence in Murshidabad. The BJP accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief of deflecting blame onto the opposition and right-wing organisations to cover up what it called a serious administrative failure.

The controversy stems from violent clashes reported in parts of Murshidabad district on April 11 and 12. While Banerjee blamed “outside elements” for instigating the unrest and accused the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) of spreading misinformation to polarize the electorate, the BJP has countered these claims by citing statements from the state police that allegedly contradict the Chief Minister’s narrative.

Malviya, who is also the co-incharge of BJP West Bengal and head of the party’s IT cell, criticized the TMC supremo for politicizing the issue and using her official position to target opposition parties and organisations. He accused Banerjee of shielding her government’s failures by launching unsubstantiated attacks, even as victims of the violence sought refuge in neighbouring Malda district.

The BJP also expressed concern over the CM’s decision not to visit the refugee camps where several Hindu families have reportedly taken shelter, calling it a sign of selective empathy and a failure of leadership.

In an open letter released earlier, Mamata Banerjee appealed for peace while alleging that BJP and RSS were exploiting a sensitive incident to play divisive politics in the state. However, the BJP has termed her remarks as “politically motivated” and “irresponsible”, especially at a time when communities are reeling from the impact of the violence.
