New Delhi: In a sharp indictment of the former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday flagged off 1,111 GPS-enabled water tankers from Nirankari Ground in Burari, describing the initiative as a step toward ending the national capital’s prolonged water crisis. The move also came with a pointed attack on the previous administration for alleged corruption and fiscal mismanagement.
Speaking at the event, CM Gupta claimed that the current government had inherited a financially crippled system. “People told me that the previous governments have completely emptied the treasury. They even left behind such a huge debt on the government. They left a liability of Rs 6,000 crore just for the metro alone,” she said.
She accused the former AAP-led administration of rampant corruption. “It is so shameful that every day, a new corruption case of the previous (AAP) government is surfacing,” Gupta said, while promising a clean and accountable governance model.
The tankers, equipped with GPS and sensors, are part of a broader effort to modernize Delhi’s water distribution system. The initiative aims to bring real-time tracking and transparency to tanker operations, a sector long plagued by the so-called “tanker mafia.”
“People of Delhi, understand this — the 27-year exile of hardship is slowly coming to an end. Every single step is now being taken in a planned manner for the welfare of Delhi,” the CM declared, asserting her government’s zero-tolerance approach to corruption.
Delhi Water Minister Parvesh Verma, who oversaw the rollout, described the project as a technological leap forward. “Under our government’s transparency model, and as India completes 10 years of Digital India under PM Modi, we’ve connected the Delhi Jal Board to a fully digital IT dashboard at our headquarters in Jhandewalan,” he said.
Verma added that each tanker has a defined route and is monitored for delivery through a mobile app. “Whether the tanker actually delivers water at the designated point or not will also be tracked, thanks to the sensors we’re installing,” he said.
Taking a dig at the previous regime, Verma remarked, “The previous government made Delhi a swamp. We’ve managed to bloom a lotus in that swamp and will continue to do so.”
