Murshidabad: Fresh political tension erupted in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district after Golam Nabi Azad, son of Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) chief and suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir, was detained on Sunday following an alleged altercation with a police constable posted at their residence.

According to police officials, the action was taken strictly under legal procedure and had no political motivation. Authorities stated that the incident involved a personal security officer assigned to Kabir’s house and was treated as a law-and-order matter.

As per the complaint, constable Jumma Khan approached the residence to seek permission for a few days of leave when an argument reportedly broke out. The policeman alleged that he was physically assaulted during the exchange, following which a formal complaint was lodged at Shaktipur police station. Based on this complaint, police detained Golam Nabi Azad for questioning.

Police sources maintained that the detention followed due process and denied claims of political vendetta. They stressed that any allegation of assault on a serving officer is handled seriously, irrespective of the individuals involved.

However, Humayun Kabir strongly refuted the police version and accused the Trinamool Congress of using law enforcement to harass him and his family. Claiming that the policeman attempted to enter his house without consent, Kabir said his son merely tried to stop him, which allegedly led to a false case being filed.

Escalating his protest, Kabir announced that he would stage a gherao of the Murshidabad Superintendent of Police’s office on January 1. He also said he plans to pursue legal remedies after consulting his lawyers.

Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty said the party’s information suggests that there was physical contact when the policeman entered the premises, but distanced the party from the incident, stating it was a matter between the police and the individuals involved.
