Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has officially sounded the poll bugle for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections by declaring its first set of candidates on Monday. The party unveiled 66 names in its opening list, marking the start of an aggressive campaign for Mumbai’s civic body elections expected to take place in January next year.

After a strong showing in the recent municipal council and nagar panchayat elections across Maharashtra, the BJP is entering the BMC race with renewed confidence. Party leaders believe the momentum from these local body victories will help them strengthen their position in Mumbai, where civic politics carries high political and symbolic value.

The BJP is contesting the BMC polls as part of the Mahayuti alliance, along with Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena. While the formal seat-sharing formula between the two allies has not yet been made public, political sources indicate that the BJP is preparing to contest around 140 of the total 227 wards, with the remaining seats expected to go to the Shinde faction.

The first list reflects a blend of women candidates, seasoned local leaders and fresh faces, suggesting a strategy that combines experience with grassroots outreach. Several candidates have been fielded from key residential and commercial pockets of the city, underlining the party’s intent to build a strong ward-level presence.
